Rom Dance, June 4th, Olal Village, Ambrym.

Ambrym Island is famous for its artifacts, carvings and the sacred Rom Dance. Taking place annually, the Rom Dance is an intrinsic part of the grade-taking ceremony which initiates the rite of passage into the different levels of hierarchy in the chiefly ranking system. This dance is very sacred and has great cultural significance. The costumes and headdresses worn during the dance are destroyed immediately after the performance to prevent spirits from haunting the dancers. Local women are strictly forbidden from watching the dance with the exception of tourists. A rich cultural event full of Kastom and mystery. For more information call 5907659 or 5639893.
