When music producer, film director and composer Tim Cole says he’s about to embark on an expedition to link the music and culture of islands like Vanuatu and PNG with Madagascar, through an origin story that’s 5000 years old, then we had to invite him in.
Tim and his partner leave tomorrow to begin recording artists across the Indian Pacific in a project with a working title of Small Island Big Song, in which common musical phrases, words and traditions are highlighted as coming from the birthplace of much seafaring – Taiwan.
It’s all part of Tim’s Churchill Fellowship to bring this newly acquired knowledge back to to Australia. He first began exploring traditional music cultures in his work with Not Drowning, Waving back in the eighties and nineties. Read more.
