Yu Luk Mi Luk Yu Portrait Prize and Exhibition

Yu Luk Mi Luk Yu Portrait Prize/Exhibition will be opening on Wednesday 2nd August, 5pm at Fondation Suzanne Bastien Gallery on Pango Rd.

Throughout art history the portrait has been a means for the artist to record stories of people, place and the subject’s impact on their life during that time. Today, considering the barrage of negativity found on mainstream media everywhere and a human thirst for tales of scandal, “Yu Luk Mi Luk Yu” portrait exhibition attempts to show and tell positive stories of people from Vanuatu from artist’s point of view,

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe gallery invited artists to participate in the exhibition and prize by submitting portraits of their chosen Ni-Vanuatu person as the subject or a chosen subject on connection with life and nature. The subjects within the artworks are required to be someone known or inspire the artist. Equally important to the artwork is the story about the subject which is required to accompany the portrait and give the viewer further insight into who the subject is to the artist.

Aiming to provide access to arts materials for artists, the gallery has received great support from Bred Bank, The Australian High Commission, Australian Government, Sharper Image, Darren Billings Picture Framing, Vila Distribution Hardware and Stop Press via the donations of artist prizes.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAPrizes will be judged across various categories and mediums by selected judges considering the combined quality and connection of the artwork and the story. Additionally, there will be a people’s choice award as voted on by visitors to the gallery and an acquisitive prize.

Opening evening will coincide with the Fondation’s monthly fundraising event and will feature art, kakae, kava and drinks. Entry is free and everyone is welcome.
