Due to the success of last years’ show, “Yu Luk Mi Luk Yu” Portrait Prize/Exhibition will be opening again this year on Wednesday 8th August, 5pm at Fondation Suzanne Bastien Gallery on Pango Rd.
Throughout art history the portrait has been a means for the artist to record stories of people, place and the subject’s impact on their lives.
“Yu Luk Mi Luk Yu” portrait exhibition attempts to show and tell positive stories of people from Vanuatu from artist’s point of view.
The gallery invited artists to participate in the exhibition/prize by submitting a portrait of their chosen Ni-Vanuatu person as the subject. The subjects within the artworks are required to be someone known to the artist, who inspires the artist or (for identity/cultural reasons) imaginary in the artists mind. Equally important to the artwork is the story about the subject which is required to accompany the portrait and give the viewer further insight into who the subject is to the artist.
Aiming to provide greater outcomes and access to arts materials for artists and, the gallery has received great support from Bred Bank, The Australian High Commission, Darren Billings Picture Framing, Island Property and more via donations of artist prizes.
Prizes will be judged across various categories/mediums by selected judges considering the combined quality/connection of the artwork and the story. Additionally, there will be a people’s choice award as voted on by visitors to the gallery and an acquisitive prize.
The winning artist will also have its work featured on Island Life Magazine.
Opening evening will coincide with the Fondation’s monthly fundraising event and will feature art, kakae, kava and drinks. Entry is free and everyone is welcome.
