Oyster Island Resort – Vanuatu

Oyster Island Resort is that authentic South Pacific island experience, without having to relinquish modern comforts. Situated in one of the most beautiful bays along the east coast of Espiritu Santo, 20 minutes drive from the capital Luganville, Oyster is an ‘island off an island’. From mainland Santo, jump on the cute Oyster Island barge, and after a very scenic five minutes ride, you will land on this superb 75 acre private island. The resort is located on the sheltered lagoon side of the island and has amazing views over Peterson’s Bay.

Oyster has 13 bungalows and villas, built with extensive use of local materials such as bamboo and natangora to showcase that island feel. Catering for a range of budgets, their Frangipani bungalows are the most affordable, with a queen bed, ceiling fan, ensuite and absolutely waterfront.

Those looking for something a little bigger and flasher will love the Deluxe Bamboo Bungalows, Oyster Island Resort’s most popular bungalows. Absolutely waterfront, with an ample veranda, the lovely fares are perfect for couples and honeymooners, and feature extensive use of bamboo in and out and spacious bedrooms. Some of the bungalows have charming outdoor showers, and you can gaze at the palms and stars above you as you wash the salt off your skin.

Oyster is also a great place to come and spend the day. A favorite with the locals who frequently visit Oyster at the weekends, this is a place where you can really be yourself and enjoy everything that a tropical island offers. The white sand beach at Oyster is second to none, with turquoise water extending across the calm lagoon it’s a perfect place to relax with a book and have a leisurely swim.

There are plenty of activities to do on the island, and really a day, is not enough to enjoy all it offers. A walking track traverses the island through charming bush and forest and there are plenty of lovely secluded spots to be found along Oyster’s shores.

There is spectacular snorkeling in the lagoon, with a choice of snorkeling areas for different skill levels and tastes. The easy-access reef in shallow waters a few meters away from the main beach is great for kids and beginners.

Those up for a bigger adventure will enjoy snorkeling on the remains of the WWII Corsair plane wreck, lying at 5 meters deep off the southern end of the island, or the coral gardens located in the Midway and Sunrise Beaches.

Taking a kayak along the bay or to the impressive Matevulu Blue Holes is an unforgettable experience. The electric-blue fresh water blue holes are world-renowned. From Oyster Island, it takes about 45 minutes kayak to reach them along the beautiful Matevulu River.

Oyster’s restaurant sits right on the beach, fabulously tropical, with its open air, high natangora roof, and is one of those places where you can sit down comfortably to a lovely meal barefooted and in your sarong. The view across the bay from the restaurant is simply spectacular.

The natural beauty of Oyster Island will take your breath away. But let’s not forget the people that make it. Oyster Island Resort has placed a lot of emphasis on nurturing a family spirit within the resort’s team and their guests. Warm Melanesian hospitality is what tops the experience for many guests of Oyster, who leave with the sense that they have found a new family to return to.
