Located on the second lagoon, only a ten-minute ride from Port Vila town, Sunset Bungalows offers lovely, adults-only, waterfront boutique accommodation. The ten superior waterfront bungalows, honeymoon spa bungalow and eight lagoon view studios extend placidly along the lagoon’s edge, all perfectly waterfront. Sit on your overwater balcony and enjoy the views as you relax into your holiday. Each bungalow and studio is tastefully decorated, with elegant hard wood pieces lending a tropical-colonial feel to the rooms. Bi-fold hardwood doors across the full length of one wall let you open your room and take in the full view of the lagoon and the cool breeze it brings. High ceilings add to the sense of space in these already large rooms. Some of the bungalows are furnished with their own kitchenette as are the studios and of course, all mod cons such as TV and DVD library are there to be enjoyed. Behind you, a carefully landscaped swimming pool with its own mini-waterfall invites you for a dip.
There are many ways to enjoy the lagoon and kayaks and snorkeling gear are available for guests as well as fishing rods, for that all-luxurious ‘fish off your balcony’ experience. When you are ready to explore your surroundings, managers Greg and Audrey are at hand to deliver all the information you need. “It is very important for us to provide a personalized experience to our guests so they can make the most of their holidays. We have actually tried all the tours and activities ourselves so we can answer any questions for our guests, to help them choose the tour that is right for them.” First landing in Vanuatu thirteen years ago as visitors themselves, Greg and Audrey fell in love with the country, returning many times and finally settling in. Sunset Bungalows’ managers for the last three years, they love their job. “We love interacting with people and have worked in the service industry for a long time. Here we have the opportunity to be based in a stunning location and do what we do best, look after people.”
Sunset Bungalows would not be complete without its restaurant, playfully called ‘Bungalow Ate.’ Absolutely waterfront, its high ceilings, elegant hard wood furniture and amazing views give this space a true island feel. The menu is both affordable and extensive, with a good variety of dishes to fulfill every whim. Open Steak Sandwich, Fish Cakes, Prawn and Paw Paw Salad are some of the many choices in the lunch menu. In the evening, dinner menu choices include dishes as diverse as Caramelized Pork, Braised Osso Bucco, Vegetable Crepe and the always popular Fish and Chips.
The extensive cocktail list also demands attention. Not because it is extensive, but because Sunset Bungalows has not one but two medal-winning cocktail makers. Lili holds the gold medal for cocktail making in the 2014 Salon Culinaire and Mary-Sita holds silver medals from previous Salon Culinaires.
So when at Sunset Bungalows, whether you are staying as a guest or having a lovely meal in the restaurant, make sure to enjoy a cocktail or two. And for this issue, you can actually enjoy a cocktail for free! Sunset Bungalows is offering Island Life readers a free cocktail with every main meal, just mention their voucher! Bungalow Ate opens every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Kitchen closes at 8.30. Young adults over 16 are allowed in the restaurant and over 18 as guests.
